Tales of the Nature Spirits
The international conference “Tales of the Nature Spirits” will be held on May 31st, 2025 at Hof Cultural Center in Akureyri and will be followed by a workshop on June 1st, 2025 in Akureyri University's Sólborg Hall.
The conference will be held in English. Its goal is to enrich and deepen our understanding of the cultural heritage that entails Elves, Huldufolk and other nature spirits among and in all nationalities and languages. At the same time it is an opportunity to increase and create a hub for collaboration and research, art and culture as well as to export our sense of knowledge of our country and its people.
On the day of the conference on May 31st. The program starts at 9:30 am and finishes at 15:00. The lecturers come from Iceland, the United States, England, Mongolia, Kenya and Czech Republic. All the lecturers have in different ways worked with intangible cultural heritage and the artists participating all share the wish to increase the uniqueness of Iceland regarding the collection and protection of sources and tales of nature spirits, along with our perception of the country that has inspired our art through the centuries and continues to do so.
During the workshop on June 1st, starting at 10:30 until 12:30 in the Sólborg festive hall of Akureyri University, multiple issues will be discussed both in English and in Icelandic and lecturers will lead discussions and conclusions. During the workshop, the participants will be encouraged to continue their work and collaboration regarding preserving sources that entail Elves, Huldufolk, and other nature spirits. A report, built on the day's findings, will be published in the mainstream media both in and outside of Iceland.
This year’s conference will continue a very successful conference on Elves and Huldufolk in our environment, that Huldustigur held in Hof Cultural Center on April 20th, 2024 https://www.huldustigur.is/conference.html.
At this point Bryndís Fjóla Pétursdóttir, project manager for Huldustígur, has joined Hulda Center for Nature and Humanities, which will participate and collaborate in the preparation and organization of the event.
North East Iceland is very rich with knowledge and stories of Elves and Huldufolk which give the area invaluable uniqueness and opportunity to lead the work in preserving the Icelandic natural heritage and tales.
It is also worth noticing that according to information from Akureyri municipality, there are now 1.800 people of 81 nationalities other than Icelandic dwelling there and in Thingeyjarsveit municipality there are now residing 352 people of 30 nationalities other than Icelandic. Our multinational society is indeed inspiring the conference to be held in English which will give more people the opportunity to participate and influence as well as emphasize the importance of examining the Icelandic cultural heritage in an international context.

The Benefit of Sensing the Nature
How can the general public retain the sense of listening to nature for their own benefit. How to enhance the imagination and how the wisdom of the hidden world can inspire methods and solutions in tackling urgent issues such as the effects of climate in our time.
Bryndís Fjóla Pétursdóttir is an Icelandic horticulturist and seer, elf whisperer, she is the founder and owner of Huldustígur ehf. Bryndís Fjóla directs all her projects from Akureyri, with focus on education and general knowledge about the intangible cultural heritage related to huldufolk, elves, trolls, mairmaids and dragons. She gives talks, presentations and leads collaborative and international projects and workshops for schools, non-profit organizations around the country and abroad.

How to build a troll chair and other pest control hacks
- the return of folkloric creatures in Icelandic ecofiction
Trolls, ghosts and other paranormal beings that keep popping up in Icelandic contemporary literature and art, with obvious references to folklore, continue to highlight the discomfort people experience in regards to our entanglements with the non-human. In this paper, examples of such reworkings of Icelandic folklore are studied in the light of theories claiming that stories of cohabitation with paranormal creatures reflect a more ecologically friendly attitude towards our environments and other beings than stories of their extermination or exorcism.

Í þessum fyrirlestri tekur Auður Aðalsteins, doktor í bókmenntafræði og forstöðumaður rannsóknaseturs Háskóla Íslands í Þingeyjarsveit, dæmi um slíka endurnýtingu íslenskra þjóðsagna og túlkar þau dæmi í ljósi kenninga um að sögur af samlífi með yfirnáttúrulegum verum endurspegli umhverfisvænna viðhorf en sögur þar sem áhersla er lögð á að sigrast á slíkum öflum.

The importance of working with the spirits of the land when making ground-responsive art. Ground-responsiveness. Place as a living ecosystem the artist interconnects with, as opposed to a static, sterile “site”.
She will use the example of ways in which she collaborated with the Huldufolk in the Botanical garden in Akureyri.
Galadriel González Romero is a Kenyan-raised multicellular organism, visual artist, rights of nature activist, and researcher investigating ethical collaboration with the more-than-human and ecosystemic approaches during our climate apocalypse. She has a BA in Fine Arts from Stellenbosch University followed by a MFA from Listaháskóli Íslands.

This presentation is based on Nancy Marie Brown’s most recent book, Looking for the Hidden Folk, published in 2022.The first time she came to Iceland, in 1986, she felt she had found a piece of herself. She could not begin to explain what she was feeling until the summer of 2016, on her 21st trip to Iceland, when she took a walk with an elf-seer: Ragnhildur Jónsdóttir.
Nancy Marie Brown is the author of several highly praised books of nonfiction based on the
Icelandic sagas, including The Far Traveler, Song of the Vikings, Ivory Vikings, and The Real Valkyrie. For twenty years, she worked as a science writer and editor at Pennsylvania State University in the US. As a writer she asks, What have we overlooked? Whose stories must not be forgotten?

Photographer and filmmaker Inga Lísa Middleton will discuss how Icelandic folklore
and the belief in elves, trolls and hidden people have manifested in Icelandic society,
and how its influenced its culture and the arts from the time of the first settlers. Inga
Lísa studied at the University for the Creative Arts and the Royal College of Art in the
UK. Her B.A. thesis, entitled ; The Hidden Nation of Iceland - A Mythological Study;
was inspired by her grandmother's tales of the hidden folk. Inga Lísa's photographic
works have been exhibited widely in recent years, including London, Paris, Tokyo,
Copenhagen and Reykjavík. She has written, directed, and produced TV shows and
short films, which have been screened and distributed internationally and won
numerous awards.

Is(e)land, Orientalism and the Frontier: Wilderness as a Catalyst of the Supernatural Experience in Michael Crichton’s The Eaters of the Dead (1976)
In this paper Jindřich Pastorek, a doctoral student at Palacký University Olomouc, aims to provide a fresh perspective on the function and representation of Nordic supernatural folklore in non-Nordic literature via an analysis of Michael Crichton’s The Eaters of the Dead (1976) and the novel’s adaptation of Beowulf. The implications of the insular wilderness as a setting for the novel’s narrative and the presence of the supernatural will be examined, with an emphasis on contrasting interpretations of the threats that populate this wilderness. The understanding of these threats, which include large sea creatures and a cave-dwelling society of the eponymous eaters of the dead, varies greatly, with some characters accepting them as supernatural, whilst others trying and failing to explain them away using the standards of scientific enquiry of the time. The presence of these contrasting accounts will be interpreted through the lens of post-colonial theory, highlighting the inherent limitations of scientific rationalism as a dominant way of understanding the natural world.

More-than-human collaboration is intrinsic to Indigenous Knowledge. Kindred lecture will discuss the growing necessity and examples of more-than-human narrative in artistic endeavors.
Daria Testo is a Buryat-Mongolian (Hori Buryad) Indigenous curator and storyteller, deeply engaged in amplifying marginalized and more-than-human perspectives through her decolonial lens. Her practice is anchored in the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage, where Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous Knowledge serve as guidance. Reflecting upon the oral and written knowledge of her ancestors, she contemplates the notions of reciprocity, local cosmologies, such as folkloristics and myths, and the value of kin-making.
Daria is interconnected with humans, more-than-humans, other-than-humans and non-humans.

Lísa studied at the University for the Creative Arts and the Royal College of Art in the
UK. Her B.A. thesis, entitled ; The Hidden Nation of Iceland - A Mythological Study;
was inspired by her grandmother's tales of the hidden folk. Inga Lísa's photographic
works have been exhibited widely in recent years, including London, Paris, Tokyo,
Copenhagen and Reykjavík. She has written, directed, and produced TV shows and
short films, which have been screened and distributed internationally and won
numerous awards.

Is(e)land, Orientalism and the Frontier: Wilderness as a Catalyst of the Supernatural Experience in Michael Crichton’s The Eaters of the Dead (1976)
In this paper Jindřich Pastorek, a doctoral student at Palacký University Olomouc, aims to provide a fresh perspective on the function and representation of Nordic supernatural folklore in non-Nordic literature via an analysis of Michael Crichton’s The Eaters of the Dead (1976) and the novel’s adaptation of Beowulf. The implications of the insular wilderness as a setting for the novel’s narrative and the presence of the supernatural will be examined, with an emphasis on contrasting interpretations of the threats that populate this wilderness. The understanding of these threats, which include large sea creatures and a cave-dwelling society of the eponymous eaters of the dead, varies greatly, with some characters accepting them as supernatural, whilst others trying and failing to explain them away using the standards of scientific enquiry of the time. The presence of these contrasting accounts will be interpreted through the lens of post-colonial theory, highlighting the inherent limitations of scientific rationalism as a dominant way of understanding the natural world.

Í þessum fyrirlestri beinir Jindřich Pastorek, doktorsnemi við Palacký háskóla, nýju ljósi að skáldskaparlegum aðlögunum á norrænum þjóðsögum, með greiningu á The Eaters of the Dead eftir Michael Crichton (1976) og aðlögun skáldsögunnar á Bjólfskviðu. Kafað verður í merkingu þess að nota eyju og óbyggðir sem umgjörð fyrir frásögnina og sjónum sérstaklega beint að nærveru hins yfirnáttúrulega, sem og að andstæðum túlkunum á ógnunum sem búa í villtri náttúrunni. Skilningur sögupersóna á þessum ógnum er afar mismunandi þar sem sumar persónur túlka þær sem yfirnáttúrulegar á meðan aðrar reyna án árangurs að útskýra þær með stöðluðum aðferðum vísindanna. Framsetning þessara andstæðu frásagna verður túlkuð í ljósi eftirlendufræða og sem skilaboð um takmarkanir þess að líta á vísindalegrar skynsemishyggju sem einu aðferðina til að skilja náttúruna.

More-than-human collaboration is intrinsic to Indigenous Knowledge. Kindred lecture will discuss the growing necessity and examples of more-than-human narrative in artistic endeavors.
Daria Testo is a Buryat-Mongolian (Hori Buryad) Indigenous curator and storyteller, deeply engaged in amplifying marginalized and more-than-human perspectives through her decolonial lens. Her practice is anchored in the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage, where Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous Knowledge serve as guidance. Reflecting upon the oral and written knowledge of her ancestors, she contemplates the notions of reciprocity, local cosmologies, such as folkloristics and myths, and the value of kin-making.
Daria is interconnected with humans, more-than-humans, other-than-humans and non-humans.

Daria Testo er Buryat-mongólskur (Hori Buryad) frumbyggi, sýningarstjóri og sagna kona. Það skiptir hana miklu máli að tala máli jaðarsettra frumbyggja og dýpka mannlegt sjónarhorn í gegnum decolonial linsuna sína.
Störf hennar er felast helst í að varðveita bæði áþreifanlegrar og óefnislegrar arfleifð, þar sem hefðbundin vistfræðileg þekking (TEK) frumbyggja þekking er leiðandi. Hún veltir fyrir sér munnlegri og skriflegri þekkingu forfeðra sinna, hugmyndum um gagnkvæmni, staðbundinni heimsfræði, svo sem þjóðfræði og goðsögnum, og gildi frændsemi.

Saga náttúruvættana
Alþjóðlega ráðstefnan Tales of the Nature Spirits/Saga náttúruvættana
felur í sér alþjóðlega ráðstefnu 31.maí í Menningarhúsinu Hofi sem verður fylgt eftir með vinnustofu 1. júní í hátíðarsalnum Sólborg, Háskólanum á Akureyri. Ráðstefnan fer fram á ensku og markmið hennar er auðga skilning okkar, þvert á þjóðerni og tungumál, á þeim óáþreifanlega menningararfi er snýr að álfum, huldufólki og öðrum náttúruvættum og um leið að skapa aukin og ný tækifæri á sviði samstarfs, rannsókna, ferðaþjónustu, menningar og lista, auk útflutnings á þekkingu okkar og skynjun á landi og þjóð.
Ráðstefnu dagurinn 31. maí. Dagskrá hefst kl. 9:30 og lýkur kl. 15:00.
Fyrirlesararnir koma frá Íslandi, Bandaríkjunum, Englandi, Mongólíu, Kenýa og Tékklandi.
Allir fyrirlesarar hafa á einhvern hátt unnið með óáþreifanlegan menningararf og listamenn ráðstefnunnar eiga það sameiginlegt að vilja hafa áhrif á sérstöðu Íslands þegar kemur að söfnun og varðveislu heimilda um náttúruvætti þess og skynjun okkar á landinu sem hefur hefur gefið okkur innblástur í listsköpun í gegnum aldirnar og gerir enn.
Á vinnustofu 1. júní verða tekin fyrir fjölbreytt umræðuefni í hátíðarsal Háskólans á Akureyri þar sem fyrirlesara munu leiða umræður bæði á ensku og íslensku máli, og taka saman niðurstöður. Á vinnustofunum eru þátttkendur hvattir til áframhaldandi vinnu og samstarfs um varðveislu heimilda er snúa að álfum, huldufólk og öðrum náttúruvættum. Gerð verður skýrsla, byggð á niðurstöðum dagsins, sem verður birt í helstu fjölmiðlum innan og utanlands.
Ráðstefnan í ár er haldin í framhaldi af afar farsælli og vel heppnaðri ráðstefnu, Huldustígs ehf. sem haldin var um álfa og huldufólk í heimabyggð sem haldin var í Hofi á Akureyri 20. Apríl 2024. ( https://www.huldustigur.is/raacuteethstefna.html).
En þessu sinni hefur Bryndís Fjóla Pétursdóttir, verkefnastjóri Huldustígs ehf, gengið til samstarfs við Huldu náttúruhugvísindasetur og mun setrið taka þátt í undirbúningi og skipulagningu viðburðarins og aðdraganda
Norðurland eystra er mjög ríkt af heimildum og sögum af huldufólki og álfum, sem gefur svæðinu ómetanleg sérstöðu og tækifæri til brautryðjendastarfs á sviði frásagna af landi og þjóð.
Vert er að taka fram að samkvæmt upplýsingum frá Akureyrarbær búa þar 1800 einstaklingar með 81 þjóðerni og í Þingeyjarsveit búa nú 30 þjóðerni önnur en Íslendingar og eru það 352 einstaklingar. Fjölþjóðlegt samfélag okkar í dag styður það að ráðstefnan er haldin á ensku, sem gefur þá flestum tækifæri til að taka þátt og hafa áhrif en auk þess er verðmætt að íslenskur arfur sé skoðaður í alþjóðlegu samhengi.
